Mary Ryan is a multidisciplinary artist, living and working in Athenry, County Galway. Her recent work is about a collection of personal objects.

Mary returned home to Ireland twenty years ago. She lives and works in County Galway.

Her current practice has evolved over time via a training in design for the textile industry, textile art and painting. She is currently using different media to explore ideas about the nature of reality, time, space, perception and memory.

Mary's interest in art began with her research into textile traditions in Central and South America some decades ago. After obtaining a textile degree in constructed textiles for industry, she turned to Art Textiles. She exhibited in the UK and Ireland (with the Design Yard and the Crafts Council of Ireland among others) before obtaining an Honours Degree in Fine Art Painting in 2012.

‘Printmaking is a new departure for me. I have attended several workshops at Galway Print Studio and am trying to develop technical skills. So far I have been using drypoint and monoprint. These attract me as I see their potential in terms of drawing or an extension of the work I have been doing recently. I like the feeling of starting again and learning through mistakes.’
